Mechanic first, or a cleaning job?
Five smells point to a car problem in the sources: raw gas, exhaust, rotten eggs, a sweet syrup smell, and burning rubber or plastic. For these, the tool quotes what the sources say to do and stops. A fogger or an ozone machine does not fix a leak.
Seven smells are cleaning jobs: stale smoke, vomit, sour milk, a musty carpet, a vinegar or dirty-sock A/C, wet dog, and cat urine. For these, the plan starts by taking out the source. The EPA lists three ways to cut indoor air pollution: source control, ventilation, and air cleaning. It says: “Of the three, the first approach — source control — is the most effective.” (US EPA)

- Milk soaks deep into upholstery or carpet. “Milk can soak down deep into the upholstery or carpet of a car and leave a disgusting smell that can linger for weeks or even months.” (YourMechanic)
- The smell can start days after the spill. “First, you have to deal with cleaning up the spill and then, a few days later, a strong unpleasant odor of spoiled milk will be an unbearable reminder of the recent mishap.” (YourMechanic)
- Milk left in upholstery turns sour. “If left to settle, not only can the moisture lead to mould in the car, but things can also get a tad smelly if sour milk is left to linger in your car’s upholstery.” (Simoniz)
- Liquids soak below the surface. “Liquids can soak below the visible surface and begin to smell days or weeks later.” (Airthereal)
“If the milk has spilled on the floor mats they should be taken out of the car and washed.” (YourMechanic)

Why it smells
4 sources name these common causes.
- A leak at a window, sunroof, or door seal. “Leaky Seals or Weatherstripping: A small leak around your windows, sunroof, or doors may go unnoticed, but over time, that trapped moisture can lead to mold and mildew buildup.” (Chemical Guys)
- Wet clothes, towels, or umbrellas. “Wet Clothing or Gear: Tossing damp gym clothes, towels, or umbrellas onto your seats or floor mats can introduce lingering moisture that invites mildew with open arms.” (Chemical Guys)
- Wet shoes, damp clothes, or A/C condensation. “Wet shoes, damp clothing, or condensation from the air conditioner can create the perfect environment for mildew and bacteria.” (Airthereal)
- A clogged A/C drain tube. “Sometimes that drain tube gets clogged allowing moisture to build up, eventually creating mold.” (Firestone Complete Auto Care)
“After rain, snow, or a spill, don’t wait for your upholstery or carpets to dry on their own – act fast.” (Chemical Guys) “The key to mold control is moisture control.” (US EPA)
If you can see mold, read the EPA guide to mold and moisture first. Our interior cleaning guide says to stop and refer the work to a trained service when you find mold.
Car AC smells like vinegar or dirty socks
A cleaning job. 5 steps, in the order the sources give.

- Rear seats and the trunk floor hold the most. “The rear seat area and the boot floor are the highest-concentration zones in most vehicles.” (Chemical Guys)
- Fur, dander, and moisture in seats and carpet. “Pet odors behave similarly, especially when fur, dander, and moisture get embedded in seats and carpets.” (Airthereal)

- A loose or damaged gas cap. “In some cases, something as simple as a loose or damaged gas cap may also allow fuel vapors to escape.” (McCullough NAPA Auto Care)
- Gas on your shoes or clothes from the pump. “Maybe you accidentally got some gasoline on your shoes or clothing the last time you stopped by the gas station, and the fumes stayed inside your car. If this is the case, the smell should dissipate soon.” (Firestone Complete Auto Care)
- Spilled gas at the pump. “If the gas smell does not go away quickly, the issue may be that you got some gasoline on your hands or clothes while filling up, or you stepped in some spilled gas near your vehicle.” (RepairPal)
- Fumes coming through the cabin air filter. “If you’re picking up on a strong gasoline smell, your cabin air filter is probably letting some fumes through.” (Firestone Complete Auto Care)
- A fuel or exhaust system issue, through the vents. “Smelling gas through your car vents can indicate an issue with the vehicle’s fuel system or exhaust system.” (McCullough NAPA Auto Care)
Exhaust smell inside the car

- A small exhaust leak can let carbon monoxide (CO) build up. “Have a mechanic check the exhaust system of your car or truck every year. A small leak in the exhaust system can lead to a buildup of CO inside the car.” (CDC)
- Driving with only the tailgate open. “If only the tailgate is open, CO from the exhaust will be pulled into the car or SUV.” (CDC)
Car smells like rotten eggs
Mechanic first. 3 sources name these common causes. None of them is a cleaning job.
What the sources say to do
- “Because several emissions and fuel system issues can produce this odor, a professional inspection is recommended.” (McCullough NAPA Auto Care)
- “When you smell any peculiar odor, you should not ignore it. Instead bring your vehicle to a professional service technician that you trust to get an informed opinion on the nature of the odor” (Car Care Council (via AutoInc.))
Common causes
- A catalytic converter problem. “it could mean a problem with your catalytic converter not converting the hydrogen sulfide in the exhaust to sulfur dioxide properly.” (Car Care Council (via AutoInc.))
- Worn fuel system parts or catalytic converter. “If the catalytic converter, fuel injectors, fuel filters, or fuel pressure sensors are worn out or damaged, sulfur-smelling gas can leak out and make its way into your car's cabin.” (Firestone Complete Auto Care)
- The engine running too rich. “It may also indicate that the engine is running too rich, allowing excess fuel to enter the exhaust system.” (McCullough NAPA Auto Care)
- A gear oil leak. “sometimes, the issue is as simple as fixing a gear oil leak since some gear oils can also smell like sulfur.” (Firestone Complete Auto Care)
Car smells sweet, like maple syrup
Mechanic first. 3 sources name these common causes. None of them is a cleaning job.

- “Have your brakes checked right away, especially if this smell is happening during normal driving conditions.” (Car Care Council (via AutoInc.))
- “Because several systems can produce a burning rubber odor, a professional inspection is the best way to determine the exact source.” (McCullough NAPA Auto Care)
Common causes
- Slipping drive belts or loose hoses. “The smell of burnt rubber could be slipping drive belts or misplaced loose hoses that might be rubbing against rotating accessory drive pulleys.” (Car Care Council (via AutoInc.))
- A fuse, A/C compressor, alternator, or brake pads. “A burning smell in your car could be caused by several things, including a burned-out electrical fuse, an overheating A/C compressor, a damaged alternator, or worn-out brake pads that need to be replaced.” (Firestone Complete Auto Care)
- A belt, a hose touching the engine, or a rubbing tire. “A slipping serpentine belt, a deteriorating hose touching the engine, or even a tire rubbing against suspension components can all produce this odor.” (McCullough NAPA Auto Care)
- Dragging brakes after a long drive. “In some cases, dragging brake components may also create a similar smell after extended driving.” (McCullough NAPA Auto Care)
- Burning carpet smell: brake trouble. “The smell of burning carpet could be a sign of brake trouble and a safety hazard.” (Car Care Council (via AutoInc.))
- Burning plastic through the vents: shorts, wires, or dust. “Electrical shorts, burning wires or hoses, and even excessive dust in the vents can cause a burning plastic smell” (Firestone Complete Auto Care)
How long to run an ozone generator in a car
Use only your machine's own manual. Ozone is an optional last step, and the car must be empty of people and pets. The EPA says:
- “conditions should be sufficiently controlled to insure that no person or pet becomes exposed.” (US EPA)
- “Ozone can adversely affect indoor plants, and damage materials such as rubber, electrical wire coatings and fabrics and art work containing susceptible dyes and pigments” (US EPA)
- “NO agency of the federal government has approved these devices for use in occupied spaces.” (US EPA)

- “For most vehicles, a treatment time of 10 to 30 minutes is sufficient.” (Airthereal)
- “Cigarette smoke and most other organic odors can be removed from cars, trucks, RVs, buses and motor homes in as little as 20 minutes to a few hours” (OdorFree)
- “For a typical car, a 30-60 minute ozone treatment is effective for mild odors, while severe smells like smoke may require 2-4 hours.” (CarXplorer)
- “Run the machine for 1 to 8 hours, depending on the size of the machine, odor severity, and vehicle size.” (Detail King)
These general claims disagree by a lot. That is why the tool shows no average and times only your machine.

Questions
How do I get smoke smell out of my car?
Take out the source first: ashtrays, butts, and trash. Then vacuum, wipe the hard surfaces and glass, clean the fabric and the headliner without soaking it, treat the vents, and change the cabin air filter. Chemical Guys says smoke particles "settle into porous materials like fabric, upholstery, headliners, and even the foam inside your seats." Ozone is optional and last, in an empty car, with your machine's own times.
Why does my car smell like rotten eggs?
Sources name a few common causes. The Car Care Council says "it could mean a problem with your catalytic converter not converting the hydrogen sulfide in the exhaust to sulfur dioxide properly." Firestone also names worn fuel system parts and a gear oil leak. NAPA says "a professional inspection is recommended." This is a mechanic-first smell, not a cleaning job.
Why does my car AC smell like vinegar?
Firestone says "Certain types of mold can cause your car's air conditioning to smell like vinegar or sweaty gym clothes." It suggests a vent and duct cleaner for mild cases, and says to have the A/C inspected if that does not fix it. Changing the cabin air filter is also on the list. Your owner's manual gives the interval.
Why does my car smell like gas?
It can be as simple as gas on your shoes or clothes from the pump. But the Car Care Council says a gas smell "is likely the sign of a gas leak in some area of the vehicle such as a fuel injector line or the fuel tank." RepairPal says: "If you have any reason to believe that your car has a gasoline leak, don’t drive it. Call your mechanic immediately for advice." (RepairPal)
How long should you run an ozone generator in a car?
Use only your machine's own manual. Airthereal says of its MA5000: "To combat this we recommend shorter 10-15 minute ozone treatments per session." and "Don't let people or pets enter the area until 30 minutes after ozone treatment ends." OdorFree says to set its dial "for 30 minutes to several hours." The OdorStop OS900 guide gives no car time. Other sources range from 10 minutes to 8 hours. The EPA says unoccupied use must be controlled so "no person or pet becomes exposed."
How much does odor removal cost at a detailer?
Shops in our price data charge about $90 extra for a strong odor, with most from $25 to $200. That is an add-on to an interior detail.

How the plan works. Steps follow the order the sources give: take out the source, vacuum, clean each zone the way its material allows, wait the label time, extract or blot, dry, treat the vents, change the cabin filter, and ozone last if you choose it. A timer appears only when one product's label or one machine's maker page states the number. The total adds up those numbers only. The pro price is the strong-odor add-on from our car detailing cost estimator, from 7 shop and guide price lists.
