What makes up this range

  1. 3 to 5 years, midsize car$650 to $1,400$1,150
  2. Total$650 low · $1,400 high$1,150

What drives the price

  • How long the coating is rated to last. Longer-rated coatings cost more and often need yearly inspections.
  • Paint condition. Swirls must be polished out first, because a coating locks in what is under it.
  • Vehicle size. More paint means more prep time and more product.
  • What else is coated. Wheels, glass, and trim are often extra.

What a fair quote should include

  • The coating brand and product, its rated life, and the number of layers.
  • The paint prep and any polishing step, and whether that step is in the price.
  • What is coated: paint only, or also wheels, glass, and trim.
  • The warranty terms, including inspections, their cost, and what voids the warranty.

How this range was formed: Low is near the cheapest 3-year coating ($649). Typical is near the median of the shop prices and range midpoints ($1,150). High is the top of the 5-year shop ranges ($1,380 to $1,400). See the sources.

Ceramic coating prices at a glance

A ceramic coating is a liquid that a detailer spreads on the paint. It hardens into a thin, clear layer that makes the paint easier to clean and adds gloss. It does not stop rock chips. For that, see PPF cost.

These are national typical prices for a midsize car, by how long the coating is rated to last:

  • 1 to 2 years: about $400 ($300 to $900).
  • 3 to 5 years: about $1,150 ($650 to $1,400).
  • 6 years or more: about $1,800 ($1,200 to $2,500).

A spray "ceramic" sealant sold as a detail add-on is a different product. It lasts months, not years, and costs much less.

Why prep changes the price

Much of the cost is prep work. Before coating, the detailer washes the car, removes bonded dirt, and often polishes the paint. Polishing that removes swirls is called paint correction. If your paint has swirls, add it to the estimate with the "Swirls or light scratches" option. See the paint correction cost estimate for the stages.

How long ceramic coating lasts

  • 1 to 2 years: An entry coating is rated for 1 or 2 years. One shop says its 2-year package bonds for about 24 months. (Sources: Severin Detailing, Dennis Auto Details.)
  • 3 to 5 years: One shop says its 5-year package lasts about five years with normal driving and washing. Another says its rated life holds when the car is hand washed and kept out of brush car washes. (Sources: Dennis Auto Details, Severin Detailing.)
  • 6 years or more: Longer claims come with a warranty and yearly visits. Gtechniq gives Crystal Serum Ultra a 9-year guarantee, applied only by its accredited detailers. Ceramic Pro's Gold package has a lifetime warranty with yearly inspections. If an inspection is missed, it drops to 5 years. (Sources: Gtechniq, Ultimate Window Tinting (Ceramic Pro installer).)
  • What voids it: Ceramic Pro's terms say washes with brushes void the warranty. The warranty does not cover swirls, scratches, chips, or water spots. (Sources: Ultimate Window Tinting (Ceramic Pro installer).)

Common questions

How much does ceramic coating cost?

A professional coating rated for 3 to 5 years typically costs about $1,150 on a midsize car, with most prices from $650 to $1,400. On an SUV or midsize truck it is about $1,350.

What is the price of a ceramic coating by how long it lasts?

For a midsize car: a 1- to 2-year coating is about $400 ($300 to $900). A 3- to 5-year coating is about $1,150 ($650 to $1,400). A coating rated for 6 years or more is about $1,800 ($1,200 to $2,500).

How long does ceramic coating last?

As long as its rating, if you care for it. Shops rate coatings from 1 year to 9 years or more. The rating assumes hand washing and no brush car washes. Long warranties often need a yearly inspection at the installer.

When should a ceramic coating be reapplied?

Plan to reapply near the end of its rated life. Warranty-backed coatings often need a paid yearly visit. Ceramic Pro's, for example, includes a wash, decontamination, and an inspection. Ask what the visits cost before you buy the coating.

Does the price include paint correction?

Not always. A coating locks in what is under it, so swirls must be polished out first. Some shops include a 1-step polish in longer-rated packages. Others charge for it, typically about $325 on a midsize car.

Sources and method

These are national typical ranges, not quotes. Local prices vary with labor costs, the shop, and your car. Every source was last checked on October 17, 2026. Most shop prices are "starting at" prices.

How each range was formed

Each range is for a midsize car. The low end sits near the cheapest entry packages and the low end of the guides. The typical price sits near the median of the shops' main packages and the guide midpoints. The high end sits near the top packages. No range goes past the prices its sources publish. Other vehicle sizes use the median price ratio from shops that publish one price for each size.

  • 1 to 2 years, midsize car: $300 / $400 / $900. Low is the cheapest 1-year coating ($299 to $300). Typical sits between the 1-year prices and the low end of the 2-year range. High is the top of the 2-year range. Only four shops price this tier, so the range is wide and thin.
  • 3 to 5 years, midsize car: $650 / $1,150 / $1,400. Low is near the cheapest 3-year coating ($649). Typical is near the median of the shop prices and range midpoints ($1,150). High is the top of the 5-year shop ranges ($1,380 to $1,400).
  • 6 years or more, midsize car: $1,200 / $1,800 / $2,500. Low is the cheapest premium coating found ($1,199). Typical is near the middle of the shop prices ($1,800). High is the top of the Maryland market range. Top flagship coatings at specialist installers can cost more. Only four sources, so the range is thin.
  • Trip fee outside the service area: $0 / $0 / $50. Typical is $0, because several mobile detailers state no travel fee inside their area. High is the top trip fee in the Detailing Scout guide.
