pH-neutral car shampoos compared

Fourteen car shampoos from nine makers: the pH words on the label, the pH on the maker's safety data sheet, what each says about coatings, and how much to mix per bucket.

Which car shampoos are pH neutral?

Twelve of the fourteen shampoos here are called pH neutral or pH balanced by their makers. Most of these makers publish a safety data sheet (SDS), and its section 9 lists the pH when the maker has a value. On the twelve sheets that give a number, it runs from 4.5 to 10. A pH of 7 is neutral.

  • Label and sheet disagree: Griot's Garage Ceramic Wash & Coat (SDS pH 4.5) and P&S Pearl Auto Shampoo (SDS pH 10) are called pH neutral or pH balanced on their makers' pages, but their sheets are outside 5.0 to 9.0. Griot's Garage Ceramic Wash & Coat is below 7 (acidic), and P&S Pearl Auto Shampoo is above 7 (alkaline). P&S: the older 2017 SDS said “pH 8-9”. Gyeon Q²M Bathe's page says pH 6; its sheet says 8.
  • No number: CARPRO Reset: No SDS found on the maker's site. Chemical Guys Mr. Pink: its SDS (7/11/2024) says “Not applicable (N/A)”.
  • For ceramic coatings: Ceramic Pro's aftercare page says "Do NOT use any car soaps or shampoos with wax, petroleum distillates, or a pH under 5.0 or above 9.0." It does not say whether that means the bottle or the mixed wash, so we compare it with the product figure on the SDS. By that figure, Griot's Garage Ceramic Wash & Coat and P&S Pearl Auto Shampoo fall outside 5.0 to 9.0, and Meguiar's Ultimate Wash and Wax contains wax. Shampoos with no SDS number cannot be checked.
  • Product, not bucket: each SDS gives the pH of the product itself and states no dilution. It is not the pH of your mixed wash water.

How much car shampoo per bucket?

Seven of the shampoos here have a bucket amount from their maker. Gyeon gives two figures that disagree, so it is left out. Pick one and enter the water in your bucket to scale that ratio.

The water you put in, like 3. Not the bucket's size.

Questions

What is a pH neutral car shampoo?

One with a pH near 7, the neutral point. Makers write "pH neutral" or "pH balanced", but none of the pages we read says what range those words cover. The pH on the maker's safety data sheet (SDS) is a firmer figure. For the twelve shampoos here with one, it runs from 4.5 to 10.

Which car shampoo is safe for a ceramic coating?

Ceramic Pro says not to use soaps with wax, petroleum distillates, or a pH under 5.0 or above 9.0. By their SDS figures, Griot's Garage Ceramic Wash & Coat and P&S Pearl Auto Shampoo fall outside that range, and Meguiar's Ultimate Wash and Wax contains wax. Of those with an SDS figure inside the range and no wax, the makers of Adam's Car Shampoo, Adam's Graphene Shampoo, Chemical Guys Honeydew Snow Foam, Chemical Guys HydroSuds, Griot's Garage Car Wash, Gyeon Q²M Bathe, Meguiar's Gold Class Car Wash, and Mothers California Gold High Performance Car Wash say in words that theirs is safe with coatings. CARPRO Reset and Chemical Guys Mr. Pink also say so, but have no SDS pH to check against the rule. Ceramic Pro does not say whether its limit is for the bottle or the mixed wash; we compare it with the product figure on the SDS. Your coating maker's or installer's care sheet comes first.

How much car shampoo do I put in a bucket?

Follow your bottle. The seven shampoos here with a usable bucket amount from their maker work out to 0.2 to 1 fl oz per gallon of water, reading Chemical Guys' "5-gallon bucket" as 5 gallons of water. Use the mix check on this page to scale your shampoo's own figure to your bucket.

Is the pH on the SDS the pH of my wash water?

No. Each SDS here gives the pH of the product itself and states no dilution. At bucket strength, an ounce or two goes into gallons of water. CARPRO says Reset stays "pH-neutral in solution". Gyeon's page lists "PH LEVEL: 6" without saying whether that is the bottle or the mix. No other maker here gives a pH for its mixed wash.

Sources and limits

Each product's page, data sheet, and SDS are linked in the table, read October 24, 2026. The coating rule is from Ceramic Pro's aftercare page. An SDS pH is the maker's typical figure for one revision of the sheet. Nobody tested these products for this page. For the full wash routine on a coated car, see how to wash a ceramic coated car. To mix other cleaners from their label ratios, use the dilution calculator.
