The short answer

A full car detail, inside and out, typically takes about 4 hours 45 minutes. The usual range in published times is 3 to 6 hours for a car in normal condition. These are the times shops publish, not a promise, and most do not say whether they mean hands-on work or the time your car is at the shop.

  • Hand wash: about 40 minutes (25 to 50 minutes).
  • Exterior detail: about 2 hours 15 minutes (1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes).
  • Interior detail: about 2 hours 15 minutes (1 hour 45 minutes to 3 hours).
  • Full detail: about 4 hours 45 minutes (3 to 6 hours).

  • Two-step correction: about 9 hours (6 to 12 hours).
  • Ceramic coating, applying the coating only: about 2 hours 15 minutes (1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes). With paint prep, two shops quote 1 to 3 days from drop-off to pickup, and one mobile detailer says about half a day for a one-step polish and one layer of coating.
  • Headlight restoration: about 45 minutes (45 minutes to 1 hour).

What makes a detail take longer

  • Vehicle size. For cleaning details, 3 sources give one flat extra time for a large SUV, truck, or van. The middle of their figures is 30 minutes to 1 hour, and the estimator adds about 45 minutes. Chemical Guys budgets 30 to 60 extra minutes for each major stage on a full-size truck or SUV, so a large vehicle with several stages can take longer than the estimate. No source gives a large-vehicle time for a hand wash or headlights.
  • Pet hair. Two shops add 1 to 2 hours for heavy pet hair.
  • A neglected car. No source states the extra time on its own. Three sources give one time for a neglected car and one for a kept car, and the gap between their midpoints is about 2 hours.
  • Paint condition. Each extra correction step adds hours of machine polishing. Norbay Mobile adds 2 to 3 hours of paint correction for a large SUV or truck. Endless Detailing gives a full ceramic coating job 4 to 6 hours on a sedan, 6 to 8 on an SUV, and 8 or more on a truck.
  • How many people work on it. Most sources do not say how many people did the work. If a detailer sends two people, ask how long the visit will take. Detailers can plan crew time with the full-detail time worksheet.

Ceramic coating: when you get the car back

  • Two shops put a full ceramic coating job at 1 to 3 days from drop-off to pickup. (Shell Shocked Wraps, Davis Details.)
  • TDS The Detail Shop, a mobile detailer, says a single-step enhancement and a one-layer coating on a typical car takes about half a day. (TDS The Detail Shop.)
  • Most of that time is paint prep. Fort Worth Auto Detail says it is not unusual to spend 4 to 8 hours polishing, while applying the coating takes about 2 hours. (Fort Worth Auto Detail.)
  • Apex Auto Pros calls it a 2 to 3 day job and almost always keeps the car overnight in its shop for the first cure. (Apex Auto Pros.)
  • Gtechniq's instructions for Crystal Serum Light say to leave the car indoors for at least 12 hours while it cures, with no moisture. (Autogeek (Gtechniq instructions).)
  • Two shops say to keep the car out of water for the first 12 to 24 hours. (Apex Auto Pros, TDS The Detail Shop.)
  • Shell Shocked Wraps says most of its coatings need 12 to 24 hours before the car can be driven, and 7 days before any moisture. (Shell Shocked Wraps.)
  • Wait before the first wash with soap: CARPRO's instructions for CQuartz UK 3.0 say to avoid detergents for 5 days, and Ceramic Pro says not to wash for at least two weeks. (Sky's the Limit Car Care (CARPRO instructions), Ceramic Pro.)

See what coatings cost and how long they last on the ceramic coating cost page.

Paint protection film (PPF)

Film installers state their times in hours for small jobs and in days for larger ones, so PPF is not in the estimator.

  • Partial front film (hood, bumper, fenders, and mirrors) takes 6 to 10 hours to install at Fresh Layer Mobile Detailing, or 8 to 12 hours with paint prep. Clear Cut Glass & Tint gives 6 to 8 hours and says a same-day job is possible. (Fresh Layer Mobile Detailing, Clear Cut Glass & Tint.)
  • A full front (full hood, bumper, fenders, and mirrors) takes 1 to 3 business days in the shop. (Champion Window Tinting, Glass Tint USA.)
  • XPEL says to wait 48 hours after installation before washing a car with its clear film, and 72 hours for its color film. (XPEL.)

See typical film prices on the PPF cost page.

Sources and method

Every time on this page comes from a US detailing shop, film installer, or product maker that publishes how long its work takes. Forums, social posts, and videos were left out. Every source was last checked on October 19, 2026.

How each time was worked out

For each service, the usual range runs from the middle (median) of the low ends the sources give to the middle of their high ends. The typical time is the middle of the sources' midpoints. Each time is rounded to 5 minutes under an hour, 15 minutes under 8 hours, and 30 minutes from 8 hours up. A total adds the rounded parts. Nothing is picked by hand, so one unusual source cannot move the range much. Extra time for size and condition is worked out the same way from its own sources and added on top.
