How to sell car detailing gift certificates

A gift certificate lets a customer pay you now for a detail someone else gets later. They sell best before holidays such as Christmas, Mother's Day, and Father's Day, and as a thank-you gift from businesses to their staff.

  • Choose a dollar value or a service. A dollar value, such as $100, works toward any service. A named service, such as “Full interior detail”, is easier to give as a gift. If your price changes with vehicle size, say the size on the certificate.
  • Give every certificate its own number. The maker makes a number such as GC-7K3Q-M9TA. It leaves out 0, 1, I, and O, which are easy to misread. Choose New number before you make the next one.
  • Keep a record of each sale. The printed page has a stub below the certificate. Write the buyer, the amount paid, and the date it is used. When a customer books, check the number against your records before the job.
  • Print the terms on the certificate. Say what it can be used for and whether it can be exchanged for cash. The default terms are a starting point. Edit them to match how you work and the law where you sell.

Print it or send it

The image download is 2400 × 1200 pixels, which is 8 × 4 inches at 300 dots per inch. Text or email it to the buyer, or print it on card stock. Print or save as PDF puts the certificate at 7.5 × 3.75 inches on a letter page, with a dashed line to cut along and the record stub below. Keep the default scale in the print dialog. To get a PDF, choose Save as PDF as the printer.

Leave To and From blank to print empty lines. Then you can sell a stack of printed certificates and write the names by hand at the sale.

Expiration dates and state law

This section is general information, not legal advice. Gift certificate rules differ by state, so check the law in each state where you sell, or ask a lawyer.

The federal rules took effect in 2010. The FTC says they are “designed to protect consumers by restricting gift card fees and gift card expiration dates.” The rules are in Regulation E, section 1005.20, published by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). For a gift certificate they cover, the seller must give buyers a “reasonable opportunity to purchase a certificate or card with at least five years remaining”, and the funds must last at least five years from the date it was issued. The certificate must also show its expiration date, or the fact that the funds do not expire.

The federal rule does not cover a certificate “issued in paper form only”. But an image you text or email is not paper only. The CFPB's official commentary says: “A card, code or other device is not issued solely in paper form simply because it may be reproduced or printed on paper.” State law is separate from the federal rule. The CFPB notes that “your state may provide additional protections and rights.”

That is why the maker sets the expiration to 5 years after the issue date. You can also choose no expiration date. If you choose a date sooner than 5 years, the maker warns you. Sources reviewed October 17, 2026.

Questions

Is the gift certificate maker free?

Yes. There is no account and no email. Your entries stay in this browser and are saved on this device only.

Is the certificate number checked anywhere?

No. The number is made in your browser and is not stored on any server. Your own records are the only list of numbers you sold. Keep the record stub or a spreadsheet of each number.

Can I change the design?

You can choose a classic framed design or a color band, and one of four accent colors. For full control, open the downloaded image in a design app and build on it.

How do I promote gift certificates?

Add a line about them to your flyer and your price list, and post the image a few weeks before a holiday. For more channels, read car detailing advertising ideas.
