Iron removers for cars, compared
Fourteen iron removers from thirteen makers: the pH words on the label, the pH on the maker's safety data sheet, how long to leave each on, and what each maker says about coatings, PPF, matte paint, and wheels.
Which iron removers are pH neutral or acid-free?
Thirteen of the fourteen iron removers here are called pH neutral or pH balanced by their makers (Gtechniq W6 only in an older blog post). Only CARPRO IronX, Adam's Iron Remover, and Griot's Garage Iron & Fallout Remover say "acid-free" in their page text. The maker's safety data sheet (SDS) lists a pH in section 9. On the eleven sheets that give one, it runs from 3 to 8. A pH of 7 is neutral; under 7 is acidic.
- Label and sheet disagree: Meguiar's Ultimate Iron Remover (4), Chemical Guys DeCon Pro (4.5 to 5.5), P&S Iron Buster (5.5), and Gtechniq W6 (about 3) are called pH neutral or pH balanced, but their sheets print a pH under 6, more than one unit on the acidic side of 7. Gtechniq W6 uses "pH neutral" only in an older blog post.
- Sheet range includes 7: Adam's Iron Remover (7 to 8), Meguiar's D1801 Wheel & Paint Iron Decon (5.5 to 7), Griot's Garage Iron & Fallout Remover (7.0 to 7.5), and SONAX Iron+Fallout Remover (7 to 8).
- Within one unit of 7: CARPRO IronX (7.5), Gyeon Q²M Iron Redefined (8), and Autoglym Magma (6.4). Gyeon's own guide says its bottle is pH 8 and the reaction ends near neutral.
- No number: Turtle Wax Rapid-Decon Iron Remover: the SDS link needs a login, and the public ingredient sheet gives no pH. Koch-Chemie Reactive Rust Remover: the SDS gives “No data available” for pH, and “7–8” for a “pH solution” it does not define. Auto Finesse Iron Out: no SDS on the maker's site.
- Bottle, not car: each SDS gives the pH of the product in the bottle. It is not a lab test of the bottle you buy.
Is iron remover safe on coatings, PPF, and wheels?
Makers disagree, and some pages from the same maker disagree. Anodized finishes: Chemical Guys DeCon Pro names them as fine, while CARPRO's US distributor says not to use IronX on them. Matte paint: Autoglym Magma names it as fine, Auto Finesse Iron Out says not to, and Chemical Guys DeCon Pro says both on different pages. Film: only CARPRO IronX and Gtechniq W6 name PPF. How to use an iron remover
Nine of the products here give a time, from 30 seconds (Meguiar's Ultimate Iron Remover) to 6 minutes (Koch-Chemie Reactive Rust Remover). Adam's Iron Remover, Chemical Guys DeCon Pro, Griot's Garage Iron & Fallout Remover, Gyeon Q²M Iron Redefined, and P&S Iron Buster give no number. These steps are what the makers' directions share. Your label comes first.
- Wash the car. Adam's says its remover works best on a dry panel, and the Meguiar's D1801 label says to apply it to a dry surface and not to pre-rinse.
- Work on a cool surface out of direct sun.
- Spray one panel or wheel at a time. Turtle Wax says a 2 ft by 2 ft area.
- Wait for your label's time. The color change shows the remover reacting with iron.
- Rinse before it dries. The makers of seven products here say never to let it dry; Autoglym Magma says drying does no harm.
- On heavy spots, wipe with a soft damp mitt or brush if your label says so, then rinse well.
- Clay what is left. The Meguiar's D1801 label and Turtle Wax both say to clay what the remover leaves behind.

"Not stated" means the maker's pages we read do not say it. Notes: CARPRO IronX: The US distributor also says “Test in inconspicuous area before use.” and “Do not use on unknown aftermarket finishes, or low cost acrylic paint.” Meguiar's D1801 Wheel & Paint Iron Decon: A pro product. Its label says “DO NOT PRE-RINSE WHEELS OR PAINT.” SONAX Iron+Fallout Remover: sonax.co.uk: “Do not use in direct sunlight or on hot surfaces”. Turtle Wax Rapid-Decon Iron Remover: Sold as Hybrid Solutions Rapid-Decon; the same page also calls it “Hybrid Solutions Pro All Wheel Cleaner + Iron Remover”. Koch-Chemie Reactive Rust Remover: Its US page tags it “Saure Reiniger und Felgenreiniger” (German for acidic cleaners and rim cleaners) next to the pH-neutral wording. Auto Finesse Iron Out: “We recommend avoiding brake discs and pads when using this product.” Autoglym Magma: Its 2.5 L directions say “Not suitable for non-clear coated surfaces.”
Questions
Is iron remover safe on ceramic coating?
It depends on the product, so read its label. Three of the fourteen name coatings as fine: CARPRO IronX (US distributor: “it won’t affect them at all” on “CQUARTZ coatings, or other true coatings”); Adam's Iron Remover (its coated-car care page shows “how to remove iron decontamination from a graphene coated vehicle with Adam’s Iron Remover”); Gtechniq W6 (“Does not damage coatings”). Auto Finesse Iron Out comes with a warning: “safe for periodical decontamination on ceramic coatings”, but “it may affect the durability of the coating”. Gyeon Q²M Iron Redefined and Autoglym Magma say all surfaces without naming coatings. Chemical Guys DeCon Pro: says coated wheels are fine (“without stripping coatings”); says nothing about coated paint. The other makers here say nothing about coatings. Your coating maker's or installer's care sheet comes first.
Can you use iron remover on PPF?
Two of the fourteen name film: CARPRO IronX (US distributor: “there is no problem at all using it on clear bra and modern PPF when used properly”); Gtechniq W6 (its HALOv2 film coating directions say to “wash and decontaminate the vehicle with Gtechniq W5 Citrus All Purpose Cleaner and W6 Iron and General Fallout Remover” before coating installed film). Gyeon Q²M Iron Redefined says all surfaces without naming film. Autoglym Magma says “Safe to use on all external surfaces”, but its 2.5 L directions say “Not suitable for non-clear coated surfaces.”. No other maker here mentions PPF. Auto Finesse Iron Out and Autoglym Magma say not to use theirs on wrapped cars, and Chemical Guys DeCon Pro warns about some wrapped finishes. Check with your film maker or installer first.
How long do you leave iron remover on?
Use the time on your bottle. Nine of the products here give a number, from 30 seconds (Meguiar's Ultimate Iron Remover) to 6 minutes (Koch-Chemie Reactive Rust Remover). Five of them say 3 to 5 minutes. The makers of seven products say never to let it dry on the surface, and Meguiar's D1801 Wheel & Paint Iron Decon says not to let it fully dry. Autoglym Magma says drying is not a problem.
Which iron removers are acid-free?
CARPRO IronX, Adam's Iron Remover, and Griot's Garage Iron & Fallout Remover say "acid-free" in their page text, and text on a Turtle Wax product photo says "acid free". Most of the others use "pH neutral" or "pH balanced" instead. Those words do not always match the safety data sheet: Meguiar's Ultimate Iron Remover (4), Chemical Guys DeCon Pro (4.5 to 5.5), P&S Iron Buster (5.5), and Gtechniq W6 (about 3) print a pH under 6 (Gtechniq W6 says "pH neutral" only in an older blog post).
Why does iron remover turn purple?
Makers say the color shows the remover reacting with iron. Most say purple, some say red or purple-red, and a few name no color. Auto Finesse lists "Assuming the purple colour means the whole car is clean" as a mistake. Check by touch after you rinse.

Each product's pages and SDS are linked in the table, read October 28, 2026. Where a maker's page, label, and SDS disagree, the table shows each. An SDS pH is the maker's typical figure for one revision of the sheet. Prices are the store price shown on that date, and the cell says which store; they change often. Nobody tested these products for this page. To wash a coated car before and after decon, see how to wash a ceramic coated car; to compare wash soaps the same way, see the car shampoo comparison.
