What makes up this range

  1. Stage 1, midsize car$250 to $600$325
  2. Total$250 low · $600 high$325

What drives the price

  • Stage. Each extra stage adds hours of machine polishing.
  • How deep the defects are. Deep scratches can need a stage 3, and some cannot be removed safely.
  • Paint hardness and vehicle size. Hard paint and large vehicles take longer.
  • Whether a coating follows. Many shops sell correction and coating together.

What a fair quote should include

  • The stage or number of steps, and what share of defects the shop expects to remove.
  • A note on defects that will not come out, such as deep scratches or chips.
  • How the shop will check paint thickness, if it measures it.
  • The time it takes and whether a coating or sealant is included at the end.

How this range was formed: Low is the middle of the lowest shop range ($250). Typical is near the median of the shop prices and range midpoints ($325). High is the top of the Arizona stage 1 range. See the sources.

Paint correction prices at a glance

Paint correction is machine polishing that removes swirl marks, haze, and light scratches from the clear coat. A stage is one round of polishing with one product and pad. These are national typical prices for a midsize car:

  • Stage 1, one polish step for light swirls: about $325 ($250 to $600). One Arizona shop says it removes roughly 50% to 70% of defects in 4 to 6 hours.
  • Stage 2, a cutting step and a polish step: about $700 ($500 to $1,200). Roughly 70% to 85% of defects over 1 to 2 days, the same shop says.
  • Stage 3, several steps for heavy defects: about $1,550 ($800 to $3,000). Roughly 85% to 95% over 2 to 3 days. Few shops publish stage 3 prices, so this range is wide.

Shops name their steps differently. One shop's "1-step enhancement" is close to another's stage 1. Compare the steps and the time, not only the name.

Correction before protection

A coating or film locks in what is under it. If you plan a ceramic coating or paint protection film, correct the paint first. Many shops sell both together.

For detailers

Correction is priced by hours. Time a test section before you quote the whole car, then price your hours with the pricing calculator. To check if a new polisher pays for itself, use the equipment payback calculator.

Common questions

How much does paint correction cost?

For a midsize car, stage 1 typically costs about $325 ($250 to $600). Stage 2 is about $700 ($500 to $1,200). Stage 3 is about $1,550 ($800 to $3,000).

Which stage do I need?

Light swirls that show in sunlight usually need stage 1. Swirls and haze across the whole car usually need stage 2. Deep marks need stage 3. A detailer should inspect the paint under strong light before quoting.

Does paint correction cost more on an SUV?

Yes. An SUV or truck has more paint to polish. Stage 2 on an SUV or midsize truck typically costs about $820, compared with $700 on a midsize car.

Will paint correction remove every scratch?

No. Correction removes a thin layer of clear coat to level out defects. Scratches deeper than the clear coat, chips, and some deep marks stay. A fair quote says what the shop expects to remove.

Sources and method

These are national typical ranges, not quotes. Local prices vary with labor costs, the shop, and your car. Every source was last checked on October 17, 2026. Most shop prices are "starting at" prices.

How each range was formed

Each range is for a midsize car. The low end sits near the cheapest entry packages and the low end of the guides. The typical price sits near the median of the shops' main packages and the guide midpoints. The high end sits near the top packages. No range goes past the prices its sources publish. Other vehicle sizes use the median price ratio from shops that publish one price for each size.

  • Stage 1, midsize car: $250 / $325 / $600. Low is the middle of the lowest shop range ($250). Typical is near the median of the shop prices and range midpoints ($325). High is the top of the Arizona stage 1 range.
  • Stage 2, midsize car: $500 / $700 / $1,200. Low is near the top of the lowest shop range ($500). Typical is the median of the shop prices and range midpoints ($700). High is the top of the Maryland range. Arizona shops quote up to $1,500.
  • Stage 3, midsize car: $800 / $1,550 / $3,000. Low is near the top of the lowest shop range. Typical is the midpoint of the Las Vegas range ($1,549). High is the top of the Arizona range. Only three sources price this stage, so the range is wide and thin.
  • Trip fee outside the service area: $0 / $0 / $50. Typical is $0, because several mobile detailers state no travel fee inside their area. High is the top trip fee in the Detailing Scout guide.
