Wash and inspect first
Finish a careful wash, then check the clean surface in good light. Look for iron specks, tar, sap, mineral spots, or paint spray from nearby work. A rough feel alone does not tell you which product to use.
Do not add this step to every wash. If the surface is clean and the chosen protection needs no more preparation, stop there.
Check for matte paint, film, wraps, fresh paint, and damaged clear coat. Clear coat is the clear top layer on many painted panels. If you cannot identify the finish or deposit, ask a trained detailer or the finish maker before treating it.
Choose a method for the deposit

These are options to check, not approval for your car. Read the exact product directions and test a small, hidden area first.
Use chemicals in small areas
- Work on a cool surface, out of direct sun.
- Read the label and safety data sheet. Use the required protection and airflow.
- Apply the product only to a surface it is made for.
- Keep within the stated contact time. Do not let it dry unless the directions require it.
- Remove or rinse it exactly as directed.
- Inspect the area before doing more.
Keep solvents away from heat and ignition sources. Never combine cleaners unless the maker gives that exact instruction. A color change from an iron remover is not proof that every deposit is gone.
Plan how to collect and dispose of dirty water. Ask the local water or stormwater office for the rules at the work site.
Use clay only when needed
Detailing clay is a soft bar or synthetic pad that removes deposits by contact. It can leave fine scratches, also called marring. Do not use it just because it is part of a kit.
Confirm the surface allows clay. Use its approved lubricant to reduce friction. Follow the maker’s method on a small area with light pressure. Keep the working face clean. Stop if it drags or leaves marks. Follow the tool’s cleaning or disposal rules if it falls on the ground.
Some XPEL films allow clay; others have different limits. Use the instructions for the film actually installed. Do not apply one film’s rules to every film.
Know when more cleaning will not help
A mineral deposit sits on the surface. Etching is damage to the surface itself. Removing the deposit may leave that damage visible. Repeated acid treatment does not restore missing paint.
Stop if the finish changes color, softens, lifts, or reacts in a way you did not expect. Follow the product’s removal instructions. Get advice before trying a stronger chemical or polish.
