Choose a detailing business name you can check

Build a short name list, then screen each name against state records, federal trademarks, domains, and local use. A search result is a record, not a legal clearance.

A usable business name tells customers what to look for and gives you a record to check. Write five short candidates. Then screen each one before you print cards, buy a domain, or file a business record.

Download the name screening worksheet. It records each search, date, result, and next action.

Start with five unsearched examples

These are name patterns, not available or legally cleared names. Replace the brackets to make a short list. Each example is unsearched; complete the checks below before using it.

Unsearched example onlyWhat it tells a customer
[Place] Mobile DetailService area and mobile service
[Surname] Interior CareOperator name and interior work
[Place] Paint CareArea and paint-care focus
[Surname] Vehicle FinishOperator name and vehicle focus
[Place] Wash & ProtectArea and a service description

Choose words that match the work you actually offer. A mobile-service name is a poor fit if customers must bring their cars to your shop. Say each candidate aloud and ask another person to spell it back before you search the records.

Write names that fit the work

Use words you can support. A name can state your service area or service type if you will provide that work there. Do not use a certification, insurer, manufacturer, government, or location claim unless it is true and you can document it.

Check the state business record

Search the filing office for the state where you will register or use the name. Record the exact search terms, date, matching names, and link. A state filing search answers only what that office shows. It does not clear every other use.

Search federal trademarks

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office provides a public trademark search. Search the full name, important words, close spellings, and related service terms. Record the results. A trademark lawyer can assess conflicts and the scope of any filing.

Check the customer path

Search the matching domain, map listing, and social handle you plan to use. Check whether a local customer could confuse your name with another vehicle service. Keep each result on the worksheet. Do not claim a name is available until the relevant filing and legal checks are complete.

A name search does not give legal clearance. Use a lawyer licensed in the relevant jurisdiction for a legal opinion and filing advice.

Put the approved name on the business card layout only after you complete the checks.
